Windsurfers expecting tricky test
Bermuda’s windsurfing team flew to Jersey for the Island Games yesterday hoping to repeat their gold medal-winning performance in the Isle of Wight four years ago.
In 2011 Scott Mello took home individual bronze as well, and while only David Kendall remains from that side, the team are confident of putting on a good display.
Matt Wilken and Alexander Jones come into the squad in place of Oliver Riihiliuoma, and the late Neil Burnie, who Mello said would be in the team’s thoughts throughout the competition.
“Neil was at the heart of the team and he will be missed both at the event and by the other competitors who got to know him in the last two Island Games,” Mello said.
The team will compete in the 15-race regatta on St Aubin’s Bay, a tricky course that involves shifting winds and lots of current.
The first race is tomorrow at 10.30am local time, and Kendall is convinced that Burnie will be watching to see how they perform.
“I am sure that he will be there with us in spirit,” Kendell said. “And we will need every bit of help that we can get because the race course looks tricky.”
