Jason Sukdeo, also known as D’General, was one of the organisers of Bermuda Heroes Weekend, which included a Caribbean-style Carnival, a soca party and an ocean raft-up

The talk of the Island this weekend? Jason “D’General” Sukdeo and his four-day party.

It kicked off with a massive turnout on Front Street on Friday when soca bands played before a crowd of about 5,000.

The 35-year-old DJ, who got his nickname because he likes to run things, admitted that on this occasion, he was a little stressed.

While everyone enjoyed themselves, his only hope was that nothing would go wrong.

“I had to stay sober and I had to stay focused,” he said. “We wanted to make sure everyone had a safe and enjoyable time. This was a very, very busy time. I expected a lot of people to turn out on Friday evening, because it was free. I knew people would be curious but I wasn’t expecting that many people.

“I felt pride. I took it all in stride, but I also thought, ‘Please don’t let anything go wrong. Please let these people get home safely’.”

Friday’s concert began a series of events organised by Bermuda Heroes Weekend Ltd. The fete continued through the weekend with international acts, a Caribbean carnival-style parade and a raft-up.

Bringing carnival to Bermuda was not simple. One of his hurdles was just convincing people that it was right for the Island.

“My events were originally planned for Morgan’s Point, but that venue fell through,” he said. “There were some logistical issues. We had to move the carnival to Front Street on Friday evening and two other events to Dockyard.

“[Then] there were people who said Carnival wasn’t a Bermuda tradition ... they are entitled to their opinion.”

A Trinidad carnival inspired him to create a similar event in Bermuda.

“I wanted to create an event that would draw visitors,” he said. “I also wanted Bermudians to have a chance to experience carnival without having to get on an aeroplane.”

It took him a year-and-a-half to bring his dream to reality.

He admitted sleep has been a problem since he started planning on Bermuda Day 2013.

“My mind was constantly going and figuring things out,” he said. “I wanted to make sure we were avoiding issues. I wanted to make sure we could do the event again for a second year.”

In the end, “everything went smoothly”, he said.

His original goal was to bring 150 visitors to the Island.

“We passed that with 200 visitors,” he said. “Those visitors will go back and tell their friends and we’ll build on that next year. One girl from Washington DC said she was bringing 20 of her friends next year.

“The raft-up was probably the biggest success and we heard from a lot of people saying how much they enjoyed it.”

He said one of the best things about arranging the carnival was all the travelling he did as part of it.

“This event has taken up a lot of my time, but I went to New York, Boston, and Miami to promote it,” he sad. “Sure, it was work, but it was fun work. It has been enjoyable, but it has been months and months of planning.”

His antidote to the stress of his busy weekend was an immediate vacation.

“I’m on expedia.com as we speak,” he said.

He’s considering going to the Hollywood Carnival in Los Angeles at the end of this month in search of inspiration for next year.

“My next carnival in Bermuda is going to be even bigger and better,” he said. “I am always looking for ideas. The Hollywood Carnival is known for its celebrities. A DJ at the Bermuda Carnival was telling me about it.”

To those suffering party aftershock, he said: “There will be a lot of tired people out there today, with headaches and muscle aches. Definitely take the time to relax after and wind down.”

The well known soca DJ and event organiser fell in love with music at a young age. He began DJing while a student at Acadia University in Canada and worked in IT in Bermuda before returning to his first love.
