A woman who rear-ended a bus has been banned from the road after admitting drink-driving.

Sandra Rodrigues, 39, from Sandys, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

The court heard that minutes after midnight on May 2, Rodrigues was driving east through the Mangrove Bay area behind a bus travelling in the same direction.

As the vehicles approached a speed bump near the Somerset Country Squire, the bus slowed down and Rodrigues’s car struck the back of the bus. Police arrived and, when speaking to Rodrigues, noticed that her breath smelled of alcohol. Asked if she had been drinking, she confirmed that she had.

The officers told her they had reasonable cause to suspect that she was driving while impaired and arrested her, to which she responded: “No officer, the bus driver stopped in front of me.”

She was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breath test showed she had 202 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — 2½ times the legal limit of 80mg of alcohol.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Rodrigues $1,200 and banned her from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
