Island pair picked for Windies squad

Heading west: Derek (Bobby) Hurdle (right) is one of two Bermuda rugby players picked for the West Indies squad that will compete in the Worlds Sevens tournament in California.

Two local players have been included in the 12-man West Indies sevens squad that will compete at the International Rugby Board World Sevens Series in San Diego, California next month.

Former West Indies captain Derek Hurdle of Mariners Rugby Club and Irish accountant Tom Healy of Renegades both made it through the recent trials held in Trinidad ? while student Kris Furbert and Devon Woosede narrowly missed out on selection.

The West Indies team are expected to have their work cut out in California against most of the world?s top sevens players from countries such as England, New Zealand, Australia and Fiji.

Hurdle, who is the brother of national team cricketer Kevin, is a seasoned veteran of West Indies rugby having captained both the sevens and 15s teams at international tournaments in the past.

Healy, meanwhile, who hails from Cork in the Republic of Ireland and qualified to play for Bermuda after three years working on the Island, will be making his West Indies debut.

The squad will assemble in Trinidad on February 5 before a week-long spell of preparation in San Diego.
