Law firm boost for Windies rugby

When the West Indies Exiles rugby team take to the field in a number of high-profile sevens tournaments later this year, they will be literally and financially backed by Conyers, Dill & Pearman.

The local law firm will sponsor the team's participation in two competitions in London, England, and another one in the Cayman Islands and part of this sponsorship deal entails the West Indies Exiles wearing the company's logo on their playing and training kit.

"This was a natural fit for CD&P. We have our headquarters in Bermuda and operations in Anguilla, British Virgin Islands and Cayman. Helping the West Indies Exiles display their talents on the worldwide stage, particularly in London, helps us disseminate the message that we are an international law firm, with multiple points of access, offering legal advice on the laws of several offshore jurisdictions.

"We are always looking at opportunities to give back to the community and helping this squad fulfil some of their goals gives us the chance to assist people from a number of different Caribbean countries as well as some of our own Bermuda based players," said CD&P's head of Marketing and Business Development, Ross Webber, himself a former member of Bermuda's national rugby team.

Jonathan Cassidy, player and sponsorship representative for the West Indies Exiles, said the team was "honoured that such a prestigious firm has agreed to be our sponsors".

"Their support will allow us to focus on our core skills without the distraction of worrying about finances," he noted.

The West Indies Exiles - a team comprised of top Caribbean and Bermudian players - begin their campaign tomorrow, competing in the Robert Walters London Sevens.

On August 3 and 4, they will be in the Cayman Islands' Sevens before moving on to the esteemed Henley International Sevens in London on August 10.

"This being our first visit to the Robert Walters London tournament, the organisers are particularly excited about our inclusion following the credible performances of our players in the IRB World Sevens Series Tournaments at both Santiago, Chile, and Mar Del Plata, Argentina, last January. Not to mention our growing international reputation for playing a highly entertaining style of sevens rugby," said Cassidy.

"The London tournaments in particular attract very high quality teams. The geographical diversity of the competing teams is sure to add to the global exposure of the tournament. This will provide our sponsors and ourselves with extensive media exposure, including both national and regional television coverage."
