BABA to promote boxing in schools
Bermuda Amateur Boxing Association are aiming to use funds donated through a recent rugby ?Fight Night? to promote the sport in the Island?s schools.
BABA were presented with a cheque for $2,500 following the Teachers RFC evening of boxing and association president Gladwyn Bean now wants to see that money invested in developing the sport.
?There has been some good feedback from parents and teachers who are interested,? said Bean, who has embarked on a campaign to introduce boxing to the school sports curriculum and investigate student interest.
Teachers spokesman Nir Sadeh, who organised the Fight Night and also serves on the BABA executive said the association wanted to increase awareness of boxing in Bermuda
There was, he said, a great interest surrounding the sport, particularly as the Island?s only medal-winning Olympian was boxer Clarence Hill back in the 1970s.
Sadeh said they hoped to increase BABA membership by appealing to school students at an age when most good boxers start their careers.
Sadeh emphasised the need for a formal boxing structure to be established and noted that plans were afoot to renovate the Admiralty House building where a new gym could be dedicated to boxing.
And he said there were plenty of opportunities for those interested in the sport to represent the Island overseas.
?The Police Boxing Club have just come back from Boston and will go to England in July,? he noted, adding that BABA also intended to take a team to the Caribbean Championships in late June.
