Teachers retain Sandys trophy

A perfect record led to Teachers rugby club retaining the annual Sandys Boat Club Cup - the season's traditional curtain raiser.

The event was held at Malabar and involved Teachers, Renegades, Mariners and Police playing 20-minute games.

Teachers started as they meant to go on, seeing off Mariners 13-0 in the opening game. Bermuda international Nathan Brown went in for a try which was converted by Andre Simons, who also landed two penalties.

In a close second match, Renegades outscored Police by eight points to five. Shane Richmond went over for Police, while Ross Myddleton scored for Renegades and Mick Williams notched a penalty.

Renegades landed their second win when they beat Mariners 7-0. Williams went over for a try which was converted by Craig Roberts.

An Andre Simons penalty was all that separated Teachers and Police in Game Four, while in the following match-up the boys in blue went down 21-0 to Mariners.

Josh McGavern went over for two tries and Gareth Dixon one. Keith Hodgkins kicked three conversions.

Teachers continued their relentless surge against Renegades, scoring 12 unanswered points.

Bermuda captain Bobby Hurdle and Devrea Noel-Simmons were the try scorers while Chris Naylor succeeded with one conversion.

Simons of Teachers finished the tournament's top scorer with 11 points, followed by McGavern of Mariners with 10 and Williams of Renegades with eight.
