‘Wide mix of people’ tackle End-to-End swim

Taking the plunge: Swimmers jump off the dock at Hamilton Princess

More than 50 people took the plunge into Hamilton Harbour yesterday afternoon as part of the rescheduled End-to-End Elite Swim.

While the event was originally delayed due to rough weather, rain and dark clouds overhead did little to hamper the swimmers yesterday.

A total of 54 people took part in the event, donning bright pink swimming caps and leaping from the dock at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. They then swam the 4.5km course, circling Marshall Island before returning to the dock below 1609.

Throughout the race, the swimmers were watched over by a team of paddle boarders and boats, ready to help anyone struggling.

Volunteer Jessica Mello said that the first swimmer reached the goal in one hour and five minutes, while the final swimmer reached the dock minutes after 8pm.

“He refused to give up,” she said. “We tried to get him out of the water at around 7.30 but he refused. Everyone made it back safely, including one lady who was very pregnant who did the whole thing and a 13-year-old who finished the course. We had a pretty wide mix of people.”
