Manders and Bascome too good for USVI

Bermuda's men's Davis Cup team improved their record to 2-1 after solid performances by Gavin Manders and Jenson Bacome enabled the side to outduel the US Virgin Islands on day three of the Davis Cup Group IV America's 2009 Round Robin.

Having bounced back from an opening day loss to Aruba with a win over Tinidad and Tobago on Friday at the Maya Country Club in El Salvador, Bermuda continued their winning streak when they clashed with the USVI.

In the day's first match Manders was pushed the full distance before defeating Terrance Highfield 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 in a tense encounter.

Bascome then took to the court to face Kristepher Elien, with the Bermudian going down in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, setting up a winner takes all doubles match that saw the local duo taking on Elien and Highfield.

In the deciding match Bascome and Manders went toe to toe with Elien and Highfield, with Bacome and Manders taking the first set.

However, it was a different story in the second, with the pair going down 4-6, making the final set that more interesting.

The Islanders held their nerve in the deiciding set, taking it 6-3, to secure the win.

n Lavern Stowe made it two for two on Saturday when she claimed both the ladies' singles and doubles championships in the Pomander Gate Seniors Open at the Pomander Gates Tennis Club.

With the men's and ladies' Doubles and Singles finals being played on a glorious sunny day, Stowe took the opportunity to stamp her name on the day's proceedings, claiming both of the women's titles.

She won the ladies singles title with relative ease in straight sets over Maja Penruddocke 6-0, 6-0 before collecting another championship when she teamed up with Jo Stewart in the ladies doubles final defeating Molly Watson and Janet Taylor

In men's singles final Yves Doyon defeated Earl Leader in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 to place his name on the title.

Leader took his chance at redemption when he and Edwin Leader took to the court and defeated David Lambert and Eldon Daniels in three sets in the men's doubles final, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

In the men's super doubles Oliver Bain and Carl Musson defeated Charles Penruddocke and Len Wedlich 6-2, 6-3,

Paul Towlson and Jill Finnigan won the mixed doubles tiitle after they held off Will Fawcett and Heidi Boyle, while Lambert also redeemed himself after he took to the court with partner Gill Butterfield and won the mixed super doubles title, defeating Oliver Bain and Pat Pamplin.
