Bermudian stamps new first
Robert Basset is proud to be the first black Bermudian artist to have his work immortalised on a local stamp.
The first day cover of the 100th anniversary Cup Match commemorative stamps are available starting July 24, 2002 at all Post Offices.
Postmaster General Clevelyn Crichlow, Philatelic Services co-ordinator Yvonne Smith and St. George's Cricket Club president Neil Paynter met yesterday to honour Mr. Bassett who painted '100th anniversary of Cup Match' last summer.
Mr. Bassett said: "I am humbled to have had the privilege and opportunity to paint the Island that I love so dearly.
"I was commissioned by St. George's Cricket Club to paint the 100th Cup Match a year ago and the painting is owned by them, but it is permanently on exhibit in the Ace Gallery."
Each of the three stamps is a section of the painting.
There are two 35 cent stamps, and a $1 one.
