Bermuda Year End: Violence continues to dominate

David Burrows minutes after his capture in the firm grip of a prison officer, left, and a policeman. The convicted child molester was on the run for six weeks and was cornered in a wooded area by a special task force of police and prison officers. Once before a judge Burrows spoke quietly but outside court he made obscene gestures and shouted at the Royal Gazette reporters: "Stop slandering my name with these allegations."

The murder in January of a 20-year-old Bermuda College student remains unsolved and Police issued a $5,000 reward locally and made inquiries in the US for information on the whereabouts of a suspect.

Saundae Jones of Smith's Avenue, Warwick was shot outside Club Malabar, Dockyard as he talked with friends. The lone gunman then calmly walked away into the darkness.

Jones was the close friend of Everett Jahni Bean who was acquitted ? along with his cousin Quincy Stanley Brangman ? of the murder of Tekle Zion Mallory outside the Ice Queen in 2001.

The trial was twice disrupted by bomb threats, which Police believed may have been caused by someone involved in the trial.

And just hours after Jahni Bean had been acquitted, shots were fired at his home in Warwick. A schoolboy was injured in the foot. Six people have since been charged with the shooting incident.

The Island recorded its second murder in May of this year with the tragic death of six-month-old Cassidy Ann Salahuddin. Her father Karim Shadeed Salahuddin, 25, of Serpentine Road, Pembroke, has been charged with her murder.

In July, Stanford Glenfield Archibald was finally convicted of the 1985 slaying of teenager Aaron Easton ? one of the most brutal murders in Bermuda's history.

The New Year was welcomed with a bang when up to 300 people were involved in riots and fighting on Front Street in the early hours of January 1, which saw crowds of up to 1,000 gather close to the junction with Parliament Street.

Former teacher and convicted paedophile Erwin Leon Nisbett, 53, went on trial in January for sexually assaulting a number of his former female pupils. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years on each of seven counts, to run concurrently.

Then Housing Minister Sen. David Burch announced he would be suing around 30 companies and individuals who he believed had ripped off the Bermuda Housing Corporation (BHC) in recent years by overcharging.

Four Chinese illegal immigrants were taken into custody after arriving in Bermuda on forged Japanese passports. They flew into Bermuda from England, and were due to leave for the US two days later, but were found to be wanted by authorities overseas.

An 85-year-old taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint by his passenger, who then stole $100 from him on Long Ridge Pass in Devonshire.

The face of the Johnny Barnes' statue on Crow Lane was defaced with silver paint by vandals, but immediately cleaned up by authorities. No one was arrested for the offence.

Teen attacker Jahmel Eugene Mallory pleaded guilty to stabbing CedarBridge Academy security guard Kariim Wales in March of last year. He was sentenced to at least three years in St. Brendan's where he is to receive psychiatric treatment.

Detectives launched a murder investigation after the body of school caretaker Eugene Lloyd (Josh) Smith was found in the garden behind Hamilton Parish Workmen's Club.

But two days later the murder inquiry was called off after a forensic pathologist said Mr. Smith's injuries had not been the result of foul play.

Lorenzo Prince Robinson, 24, pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder of US tourist Scott Jable, who was stabbed in broad daylight on Front Street while shopping with his wife and baby son in October, 2002.

Masked robbers held up a front desk worker at the Grotto Bay Beach Hotel ? one armed with a machete and one armed with a knife. Three men and a woman have been charged with the crime.

In September three Police workers were killed when they were swept off the Causeway during the height of Hurricane Fabian.

The first multiple fatalities in Bermuda Police history saw P.c. Stephen Symons, P.c. Nicole O' Connor and St. George's duty officer Gladys Saunders swept to their deaths, along with fisherman Manuel Pacheco.

Two child abuse trials collapsed causing condemnation from welfare groups and parents over both Police incompetence and problems with the justice system.

In November, a gun amnesty was launched after machete and baseball bat wielding youths went on the rampage at an Elephant Man concert at White Hill Field as gang violence once again reared its ugly head.

Just one working firearm was surrendered during the 28-day amnesty although Police did recover a rocket launcher casing following an anonymous tip-off.

During the amnesty a daylight outbreak of gang violence saw one man require 34 stitches to a head wound after being attacked with a machete in Devon Lane, Devonshire.

Also in November, child molester Howard Soares was jailed two years after sickening sexual assaults on two young girls while staying at a family friend's house.

The Police finally settled a two-year wrangle with Government over pay while severe staff shortages were acknowledged by both the Police Association and the Commissioner.

And the Lagoon Park murder trial continues next month with Robert Blair Tucker, James Alan (Spooks) Dill and Terranz Sidney (Monster) Smith accused of murdering or aiding, abetting or enabling the murder of Stanley Lee in what police say was a drug deal turned nasty in July 2001.
