One Bermuda Alliance leader Craig Cannonier abruptly ended a press conference yesterday and refused to entertain questions about the controversial consultant’s report to the United Bermuda Party.The Royal Gazette raised the issue at a media event to outline his party’s position on crime.He was asked whether he had discussed the matter with the three OBA candidates — Grant Gibbons, Glen Smith and Michael Dunkley — named on the report’s cover.Mr Cannonier said: “Let me be very clear about this and these alleged reports and documents that we continue to hear from the media.“They have nothing to do with the party I lead — the One Bermuda Alliance.”He then launched into a speech about what he said were “major concerns” facing the country.“I will not stand by and allow the One Bermuda Alliance to be attacked over something it has nothing to do with,” he continued.“There are a lot of pains of the past that we can all look at, but if we are driving in the car looking in the rear view mirror, Bermuda, we are going to bump into all kinds of issues.”He threatened to end the press conference if he was not allowed to finish his speech.When he did finish his speech, Mr Cannonier left the podium, saying “the press conference is over”.“That’s how you treat the media,” he was heard to say from inside the OBA boardroom.When this newspaper attempted to ask further questions in private he refused to answer any more questions.He was told that The Royal Gazette had evidence that the report was real. “I have never seen the report,” he said.The report was e-mailed by The Royal Gazette to Mr Cannonier on Sunday. Queries to Dr Gibbons, Mr Smith and Mr Dunkley over the last few days were met with silence.Asked whether the phrase “black surrogates” offended him, Mr Cannonier said: “This press conference is over.”The Progressive Labour Party issued a statement criticising Mr Cannonier’s behaviour at the press conference.“Today’s footage of the OBA’s Craig Cannonier storming out of a press conference is extremely troubling. Bermudians need to ask themselves whether Mr Cannonier has the right temperament to lead our country,” the PLP said.“Bermudians deserve answers to the very serious questions that have been raised about the OBA.“For Mr Cannonier to fly off the handle and storm out of a press conference, abandoning his colleagues, makes you wonder what does he have to hide?“Several sources have confirmed that the report exists and said that ‘black surrogates’ should have been used in place of white candidates and that they blamed their 2007 election loss in certain constituencies on ‘downscale’ and ‘less educated’ voters.“What we found most troubling, however, is that in today’s press conference, Mr. Cannonier said, and we quote, ‘some report that existed four years ago.’“Last week, Mr. Cannonier said the report was a ‘fabrication.’ Now, he is saying that the report existed four years ago? Which is it? Did the report exist or was it a fabrication? It’s time for Craig Cannonier, Glen Smith, Michael Dunkley and Grant Gibbons to come clean.”Mr Dunkley later e-mailed The Royal Gazette to apologise for the delay in responding to our queries and promised to comment by 8pm. Nothing was received from him.But a statement issued by the OBA on Dr Gibbons behalf arrived shortly before 10pm.It reiterated the OBA message that the report had nothing to do with the party."These reports have absolutely nothing to do with the party of which I am a member — the One Bermuda Alliance,” Dr Gibbons was quoted as saying.“The OBA is concentrating on the issues that matter most to every day Bermudians.”
