Wedding season is upon us.

Once that special invitation arrives in the mail there’s only one real question left to ponder: what to wear?

The great news is there are lots of dos — a printed dress in a light summer shade, linen pants suit or a floral headpiece. But there are also some obvious style don’ts according to three chic women we met in the city this week.

Hairdresser Alexandra Arruda said her number one rule when it comes to wedding attire is to never upstage the bride.

“Don’t wear white because the bride is supposed to wear white. It’s her day,” the 23-year-old said.

“I’d also say no black. It’s a happy day and black tends to be a dull and miserable colour. You should also avoid huge bags. It’s better to go with a small clutch because it’s an elegant occasion.”

Miss Arruda said her everyday style for work tends to be dark but she tries to mix in modern and classic styles.

“I like all the latest trends and will wear tight things and baggy things. I tend to try a little bit of everything,” she added.

Most of her inspiration comes from fashion magazines. She also likes the style of Khloe Kardashian. “She isn’t the smallest girl, but she looks amazing in most things she wears. I like more of her casual looks,” Miss Arruda said.

Sharmaine Landy also said white was a ‘no-no’ for anyone attending a wedding, but she believes that black attire could work for a formal, evening affair.

“I’m fine with wearing black for weddings,” she said. “It’s sleek and just depends on if you know the bride well and her view on certain styles.

“Generally I would say earth tones are really good for a wedding or bright blue or purple.

“But I wouldn’t wear anything too low cut or anything too short. Again, you don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself. It’s not about me and I would rather be very simple and chic at a wedding so if anyone does notice my outfit it’s because it’s sophisticated.”

The 29-year-old described her typical style as “classy sophistication”.

“To me that means I know what looks good on me, but I’m also aware of what is stylish too,” she said. “I like very feminine things with a touch of edge.

“I tend to get inspiration from our environment. We live on a beautiful island so the nature sticks out to me a lot. I love bright colours. I’m also inspired by art with its contrasts and edgy lines, so when I see anything that is different it automatically translates into an outfit for me.”

Sheila Gazzard said one of her style don’ts for weddings is anything too exposing or risqué. “There is a certain etiquette you have to maintain when it comes to weddings,” she said. “You want to be as respectful as possible when you’re a guest.”

The 45-year-old said her style tends to be quite conservative anyway.

“I’m a senior compliance manager and it’s very important in the banking industry in general that you portray a professional image,” she said. “That’s key for us. My style is very conservative, but I’d say it’s also up to date and has a tasteful professional edge to it.”

Her favourite shop is White House Black Market; she tends to stick to wearing that particular line of clothes.

“I’m pretty much a black and white kind of person and like to stay true to those colours, nothing too bright or flowery. I look for pieces that are professional, clean and conservative,” she added.
