‘Family issue’ lands father in court

A domestic dispute turned into a theft charge in Magistrates’ Court for a St George’s man who threw away his former girlfriend’s phone.

Michael Weares, 26, admitted to grabbing the Blu cellphone off Stevonte Somersall-Ahknaton as the two argued outside his Hidden Valley residence.

The court heard that the two have a daughter, aged 19 months. The defendant had care of the child on February 19, but her mother came to the house the next day after being told that Weares was intoxicated.

During the confrontation, Mr Weares threw her phone into the bushes. It has not been recovered.

Calling the matter a family issue, Mr Weares told the court that he would pay for the phone, but disputed the value of $300 cited by the prosecution.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo gave bail of $1,000, adjourning the matter for the phone to be valued.
