Native and endemic species are being planted in Warwick near Southlands by Belco, the power generating company is advising the public.

Landscape gardening company Brown & Company Ltd is doing the work in the vicinity of Southlands in Warwick. The native and endemic plants being used are: palmetto, olive wood, buttonwood, Jamaica dogwood, snow berry and Bermuda cedar.

Belco said the landscaping is part of its continuing, island-wide vegetation management programme.

The planting that is being carried out near Southlands replaces vegetation that was removed some months ago. Trees and other plants were removed because they were interfering with overhead lines, explained the company.

Low-growing plants that are being planted will never interfere with overhead lines, and some taller species that are located at least ten feet away from overhead lines.

The work started late last week and will continue at least through this week.

Belco said it does not expect any impact to traffic or pedestrians. “We have received queries from passers-by about Brown & Company’s signs,” Belco said in a statement. “We thank the public for their co-operation as the vegetation management programme continues.”
