Quick learner: Nahki Wells scored a hat-trick for Bradford at the weekend.

Nahki Wells has played down his hat-trick heroics and praised his team-mates for their role in Bradford City’s vital 3-1 victory over Northampton Town at the weekend. The Bermuda international, who has scored 11 goals this season, was in irrepressible form at Sixfields Stadium, striking in the 11th, 39th and 54 minutes to help secure City League Two status.Rather than bask in personal glory, the 21-year-old believes his City colleagues deserve much of the credit for the side’s vital victory.“I just scored the goals. Without all the tackles and blocks, my goals wouldn’t have counted and we still would have lost,” said Wells, who bagged the Bantams first treble since 2008.“But I’m buzzing to score my first professional hat-trick in such a big game and to have hundreds of our fans screaming out my name made me very happy.”City boss Phil Parkinson had subbed Wells at half-time in the previous game and was thrilled to see him come back firing on all cylinders against the Cobblers.“Nahki was exhausted at Shrewsbury after running himself into the ground three days before against Southend. He’s still a young kid and his body is not hardened to professional football yet,” said Parkinson, whose side are nine points clear of the drop zone with only three games to go.“But I thought he was great on Saturday. We knew we could exploit the (lack of) pace of their two centre halves and Nahki is perfect to do that because he is so quick.“He’s scored 11 goals now. Look at the number of starts he’s had (17) and that’s a very good ratio.“There are times when you get disappointed and frustrated with him but he’s a young player.“But Nahki’s a very quick learner. He ticks a hell of a lot of boxes to be a very good player.”Wells was recommended to Bradford by the club’s former winger Mark Ellis, who coached him at the UK-based Richmond International Soccer Academy.Prior to joining Bradford, Wells made three substitute appearances for Carlisle in League One.City take on Macclesfield Town at home on Saturday.
