Correiro reaches another milestone
EJ Correiro equalled the mare’s track record at Vesey Street during the last round of harness racing at Vesey Street. The 11-year harness veteran stopped the clock at 1.03/3 competing in the Free for All with Micheal DeCosta’s Abbey’s Dream.Correiro’s time was also the fastest recorded on the day.Reflecting upon his latest milestone in the sport, the 26-year-old warehouse manager said: “Tying the record was definitely a goal of mine and if all goes well maybe I can break it in the last few races and push the record even further.“The mare’s record has always been one that I’ve had an eye on. All of the horses that I’ve owned have been females so I’ve always been chasing that.“I had the mare’s record at one point with my own horse (Shamrock Julie) but it’s been broken since. But to have the opportunity to try and get it again is very good.”Incidentally, Abbey’s Dream set the current mare’s track record last season, with Correiro’s cousin Nick DeCosta in the bike, after eclipsing the previous mark held by Darico Clarke (Time After Time). With the season-ending Champion of Champions races on the horizon, Correiro is encouraged to see DeCosta’s mare peaking at the right time.“She has been doing consistent fours all year and I have been trying to get her down just a bit more,” he added. “It seems she’s starting to get a bit faster at the right time coming into the Champion of Champions, so we will see how everything goes.”Getting a leg out of their respective times bars during the last round of harness racing were Thomas Whited (American Treat) and Zinho Cooper (Return to Sender). Whited ran a 1.06/1 in the 1.06/2 1.07/2 time bar while Cooper went 1.07 flat in the 1.07/3 1.09/3 division respectively.Cooper was also among the day’s double heat winners that also included Arthur Hurst (Colonel’s J), Brandon Lopes (LA Erma Time) and overall track record holder Colin Mello (Big Red Machine), who made a clean sweep of top honours in the Free for All ‘B’ division. On a more sombre note, Jason Lopes’ stud Captain Progress broke a leg in the first heat in the Free for All ‘B’ Division while Buddy Sutherland grandfather of rookie driver Chad Sutherland died earlier this week following a long bout with illness. The late Sutherland, who often volunteered his services at Vesey Street, will be laid to rest today following a home going service at St Mark’s Church.“The DHPC Committee would like to extend sympathy to the family on behalf of our membership,” read a Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) statement. ”He was a prominent face in the driving world. He will be sadly missed.”DHPC members will form a guard of honour at today’s funeral to give the late Sutherland “the send off he deserves”.
