A lovely setting with good music

The sprites and fairies on the programme weren't the only mischievous spirits at a Bermuda School of Music concert at the weekend.

Children danced and played into the evening amidst the magical setting of Verdmont.

'A Midsummer Night at Verdmont' was a beautiful journey through some of the most romantic songs and string arrangements, performed by the school's faculty.

With musical direction by Ryan Ellis, the open air concert celebrated the Summer Solstice but was also a fundraiser for the Bermuda National Trust's Open Space Programme and the School's musical outreach.

Under the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance, guests picnicked in the grounds of the 18th century house, enjoying champagne and gourmet fare on their blankets and deckchairs.

Oliver Grant on the piano was the musical aperitif, followed by soloist Holly Stephens with renditions of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', 'Moon River' and 'The Bare Necessities', amongst other classics.

Then cellist Caroline Eaton, violinist Lisa Hollis and violist Laura Appert took us through the string arrangements of Chopin's 'Nocturne', Schumann's 'Traumerei' and Vivaldi's 'Concerto Grosso in D Minor'.

This was followed by a selection of romantic ballads by soprano Elizabeth Jones, as night fell and Verdmont bathed under the moonlight.

Dvorak's 'Song to the Moon', Barber's 'Sure on this Shining Night', Gladys Rich's 'American Lullaby' and George and Ira Gershwin's 'Someone to Watch Over Me' sounded bewitching in the garden, as the wine flowed and the tree frogs provided a background chorus.

Then it was time to round off the summer evening with an uptempo selection of rock 'n' roll classics by local band Working Title.

The group, consisting of Steve Crawford, John DeSilva, Laidlow Fraser-Smith, Oliver Grant and Lamont Robinson, performed a variety of songs from The Beatles, The Doors and Coldplay before it was time for us to trudge home to bed and the whimsical dreams of slumber.
