Make South Road one-way on Sundays

July 3, 2013Dear Sir,As a cyclist I have to declare a vested interest in this suggestion, but I’m sure both tourists and locals could benefit.Readers may have heard about or seen the city of Paris closing the express boulevards on the banks of the Seine every Sunday. This converts the normally traffic choked roads into avenues of pleasure for walkers, rollerblades and cyclists.Perhaps we could experiment with a similar idea here.Imagine a temporary ‘one way’ system on South Road Warwick/Paget on Sundays (say 6am to 6pm). During the trial the route would stretch from the South Road junction with Middle Road in Paget (the traffic lights opposite Paget Marsh) to the Horseshoe Road junction opposite South Shore Park. Motorised traffic is allowed to travel on South Shore in a westerly direction only, no overtaking allowed. The free carriage way becomes a route for bicycles, roller blades, runners and walkers, travelling in either direction but respecting the ‘keep left’ rule.I can hear the residents of South Road howling in anguish but if you study the map there are plenty of routes linking south to north (with Ord Road and Middle Road as alternative routes) and there need not be a major detour in most journeys.School students could monitor the numbers of users as a practical part of their statistics lessons, and publish the results in the press. If significant numbers of people (that probably should be a minimum of five percent of the population) use the facility it should become a permanent feature and perhaps extended to other roads.I accept that the introduction would require significant policing but I’m sure we could find volunteers for the traffic control duty during the introduction.MARTIN WILLIAMSONPaget
