A Warwick man was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, in Magistrates’ Court this morning after he admitted assaulting a police officer.

The court heard that Sean Evans, 25, was being arrested on March 21 at Hamilton Police Station for an unrelated offence when he started struggling and using profane language.

The struggle continued, with officers unable to place Evans in a cell.

After a one-on-one struggle with the station sergeant, officers had to use a Taser to subdue Evans.

In court, Evans apologised for his behaviour, stating that he had already apologised to the sergeant.

“I was highly intoxicated,” he said. “I feel that something was slipped in my drink when I was out that night.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo said: “You were certainly acting like someone who is on something.”

Mr Tokunbo sentenced Evans to six months in prison and 12 months of probation, as a condition of which he is to abstain from alcohol and drugs.

Also in court, 17-year-old Oliver Rodriguez Ramos, of Pembroke, admitted assaulting a police officer and uttering threatening words, but denied violently resisting arrest, assaulting a man, and using offensive words.

The Crown offered no evidence on the charges that he denied.

The court heard that Police were called to an incident in Pembroke on March 7 during which the defendant told the officers: “F*** off. I hate the f*****g police. I’m going to get you.

“You think you’re bad — you’re not the only ones with guns. ... you know what we do with police in the DR?”

Mr Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter to May 13 for sentencing.
