New waste charge at Tynes Bay

There will be a new fee to dispose of waste water and sewage at the Tynes Bay waste facility, starting April 1.

It will cost $15 per ton, according to the Ministry of Public Works, which said the service was free at present.

The facility has run since 1987 and is in need of upgrades, making the free disposal “unsustainable”, a spokeswoman said.

“Some of these improvements have already been implemented and others are scheduled to be completed over the next couple of years,” she added.

“The new fee will enable the Ministry to continue improvements such as metering and monitoring incoming flow and identification of the hauler responsible, regular sampling and analysis of effluent, control of odour emissions and removal and dewatering of sludge on a continuous basis.”

Waste haulers can contact the appropriate department at 278 0570 or by e-mail at water@gov.bm for a background on their company’s deposits at Tynes Bay, to estimate future costs.

The new charge will appear in the amended Government fees for 2015 that will be issued in The Royal Gazette.
