Relay for Life to help fund cancer research

Action from last year's inaugural Relay For Life

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has announced that Ironshore has resumed its role as title sponsor for the second annual Relay For Life.

Teams take turns walking laps around a track for 24 hours to raise awareness and funds to support cancer prevention and detection, and to improve access to treatment with the local establishment of radiation therapy.

The event will begin at 6.30pm on May 29 and conclude 24 hours later at North Field, National Sports Centre.

Teams are of ten to 15 people, with each member asked to raise $100 to participate and receive a free T-shirt.

“Event organisers are delighted to have Ironshore as the title sponsor for the Relay for Life of Bermuda event for the second year in a row,” said Tara Soares, executive director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre.

Ninety-five per cent of the funds raised during the relay will remain on the Island to support Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre’s radiation therapy initiative. The rest will be donated to the American Cancer Society to help to fund cancer research, prevention and care programmes.

“Last year we raised just over $450,000,” Ms Soares said. “This year we are hopeful to raise even more to help fund our new radiation therapy treatment centre.”

Teams can register by April 30 at www.bermudaRELAY.com or call 236-1001.
