International broker seeks buyer for former South Shore hotel site
The former Sonesta/Wyndham is up for sale through international hotel brokers Jones Lang LaSalle.A five-star hotel was supposed to be built on the 32-acre oceanfront property on South Shore.But yesterday Scout Capital Real Estate, the US development company that bought the site in 2007, told this newspaper to speak to Jones Lang LaSalle when asked for an update on the development.Jones Lang LaSalle is an international financial real estate firm which specialises in hotel brokerage.The company brokered the sale of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess in 1998.A spokeswoman at Jones Lang LaSalle said “no comment” when asked about the Bermuda property. The chief development officer of Scout Capital Real Estate, Kevin Fox, said he could not comment any further.Two hotel developers with projects in Bermuda, who did not want to be named, said they were aware of the sale but did not know the details.The company’s website still has the property on its website as The Southampton Beach Resort. It incorrectly states that the family-oriented private club and resort will open in 2011. The hotel which used to sit on the property was demolished in 2009.In October former Premier Ewart Brown said the former Sonesta/Wyndham site was for sale but no further information was released.The Royal Gazette has previously reported the development was supposed to be financed by Lehman Brothers, before the bank went bankrupt in 2009.
