Government overspent by almost $23 million across seven ministries in the 2014-15 fiscal year, according to supplemental estimates tabled this morning in the House of Assembly.

The top “offender” was financial assistance, at $5.6 million, under the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sport, followed by a little more than $4 million incurred by Public Works for hurricanes Fay and Gonzalo last October.

The back-to-back hurricanes also cost National Security a fraction more than $1 million — $792,000 for the defence account and $301,000 in fire services.

The Ministry of Economic Development had a supplemental estimate of $1.58 million for the America’s Cup, while the Economic Development headquarters logged $3 million for capital development relating to sailing event.

The Ministry of Home Affairs lists $1.5 million in legal fees over the voiding of Hamilton’s waterfront lease, as well as a loan guarantee for the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation.

The Ministry of Tourism Development and Transport lists $3.27 million extra for airport operations in revenue guarantees and Legal Affairs went over budget by $750,000 for legal aid.

Additionally, there was a $1.8 million overspend listed for a Bermuda Housing Corporation grant for capital development.
