Palmetto Road closed until further notice

Motorists are advised to take North Shore instead of Palmetto Road after rain caused a collapse in and around the area of 6 Perimeter Lane

The Ministry of Public Works is advising the public that Palmetto Road has been closed from Bishop Spencer Road to Marsh Folly Road.

All traffic is being advised to take North Shore Road instead of Palmetto Road.

The road closure at Palmetto Road is because of a further collapse of material overnight as a result of rain at 6 Perimeter Lane, which may cause further deterioration.

In the interest of public safety, the ministry is advising motorists to avoid Palmetto Road to enable the completion of the 6 Perimeter Lane project.

The westbound lane of Palmetto Road has been closed, with temporary lights in place, since an initial collapse more than one year ago.

In November, landlord John Roach was quoted in The Royal Gazette wondering when debris from the collapse would stop pouring into the backyard of his Perimeter Lane residence. It had been Valentine’s Day when a retaining wall collapsed behind his home, and a weekend of heavy rains just before his interview had brought more rocks, sand and concrete blocks tumbling down from the site alongside Palmetto Road and onto his property.

Mr Roach said in November that the previous month’s hurricanes the island may have pushed the Perimeter Lane down on the list of priorities at the Ministry of Works and Engineering. “I understand everybody else had something going on too, but we’re going on close to a year now.

“Every day we come out and something new has happened.”

He also had told The Royal Gazette: “We can come out here and watch it coming down when it rains. It’s always going to be somewhat of a problem. I suggested to the Minister that while engineers are trying to figure it out, they could build a temporary wall. It just seems that nobody knows what the plan is.”
