Man opts for 30 days in prison

A man who was violent towards Police elected to spend a month in jail rather than pay a hefty fine when he appeared at Magistrates? Court.

Troy Commissiong admitted using offensive words and violently resisting arrest during an incident in Hamilton on December 4, 2006.

Crown counsel Takiya Burgess told the court the 44-year-old defendant was stopped by Police on Reid Street regarding a traffic matter. He became aggressive and got out of his car, shouting ?I didn?t do anything wrong? and ?f**k you? said Ms Burgess.

He ran off, but fell on the sidewalk and struck his head on a wall. Officers informed him he was under arrest for using offensive words, but he continued to violently resist, including pushing an officer.

When he was eventually detained and taken to the Police station, he declined medical treatment for his injury. Commissiong, of Brackish Point Lane, Devonshire, is unemployed and has previous convictions for this kind of offence, the court heard.

The defendant told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he wished to apologise for the incident and to the officer involved. Mr. Warner fined him $1,000 with 30 days custody for non-payment. When the defendant was told he had other unpaid fines, he said: ?I may as well do 30 days for everything.?

Mr. Warner agreed to this so Commissiong could ?start afresh?.
