‘A Life in the Theatre’ comes to City Hall
As part of the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts’ 40th anniversary, Walnut Street Theatre will be presenting two performances of A Life in the Theatre.
This funny yet touching play provides a behind-the-scenes peek at the challenge of two actors battling for the spotlight. One experienced and the other a newcomer, they are forced to share a dressing room while fighting for their place on the stage. From rehearsals to reprisals and ego trips to acting tips, this play gives a glimpse into the complex relationship that develops as the torch is passed from one generation to the next. It is a transition that wavers from love and mutual respect to impatience and resentment.
Written by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet, A Life in the Theatre is a delightful theatrical experience. Mr Mamet is widely considered to be one of the most influential American playwrights of his generation. He has written important works, including American Buffalo and Speed-the-Plow. Audiences may remember Walnut Street Theatre from its compelling production of Proof as part of the 2012 festival.
“Walnut Street Theatre performed in the 2012 Bermuda Festival and we are thrilled that they have chosen to return for our 40th anniversary to perform A Life in the Theatre,” Ian Davidson, the festival chairman, said.
Karen Pollard, the festival’s artistic director, added: “A Life in the Theatre provides a complete contrast to the dramatic productions presented earlier in the festival. It is a fascinating and entertaining exploration of the development of human relationships as the younger actor gradually feels his way into the limelight. This play is a great introduction to David Mamet’s work and should not be missed.”
A Life in the Theatre will be performed on Friday and Saturday at the Earl Cameron Theatre, City Hall, starting at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased at www.bdatix.bm at a cost of $65 for adults and $25 for students. Owing to adult language, A Life in the Theatre is recommended for mature audiences only.
The Bermuda Festival outreach programme is offering two masterclasses in acting technique led by a cast member of the Walnut Street Theatre.
Nancy Smith, the Bermuda Festival’s outreach coordinator, said: “Walnut Street Theatre has returned to the Bermuda Festival to perform A Life in the Theatre. We are thrilled that they have agreed to offer masterclasses for high school students and adults.
“With an active acting community, I anticipate a great turnout for each class.”
The masterclasses will be centred on activities that are designed to improve technique and explore the acting challenges of stage productions.
“Participants will have the opportunity to read from part of the script in order to obtain a better understanding of what they are learning,” a statement from the Bermuda Festival said. “The first masterclass, which will take place at Bermuda High School on Thursday, February 19, will be aimed at high school students with an interest in drama.
“The second masterclass is focused on working with adults and will take place on Saturday, February 21, between 11am and 12pm at the Warwick Academy drama studio.”
Student tickets will be $5 while adult tickets will be $25. Register by emailing outreachvolunteer@bermudafestival.org
