Industrial light and air

Rima Domus' open plan kitchen and floating staircase

Greenwich Village, the Meatpacking District — and Bailey’s Bay.

The much sought after, vastly spacious and often hand-crafted lofts are usually found in the post industrial, now residential, areas of major cities. And more rarely, in smaller, much less heavily industrialised areas.

In Bermuda, Rima Domus must be almost unique — it is a loft-style home, created from a North Shore Road working building. Number 184 North Shore Road has undergone several reinventions, including, most memorably, as a pub.

Today it has been converted into two town houses, and this one — with three bedrooms and three bathrooms — was purchased by a young, prize winning architect who has created a contemporary home for his family where the warmth of carefully constructed nooks, along with flooring, wood and tile finishes and other thoughtfully chosen details are in perfect harmony with soaring ceiling spaces, tall windows, huge living areas — as well as a magnificent floating staircase.

Realtor Jonelle Smith, describing the Hamilton Parish house, which is on the market for $1,350,000, said it is newly constructed and unrivalled in its quality and architectural detail.

Ms Smith said the views of the North Shore are “stunning”, and described the “unforgettable” sunsets from a rooftop deck. “Combined with the light-emanating, tall windows make Rima Domus a truly stunning home.” There are other balconies as well.

“The residence is the perfect combination of open plan, modern interior with the traditional Bermudian facade. The large, open plan kitchen is complete with all major appliances and has an extraordinary giant red wood tree trunk countertop for the island.” The appliances are all recently purchased and from top quality manufacturers.

Ms Smith explained the floating staircase leads up to the mid-level floor, which has a sprawling floor-through view of the kitchen below. “This mid-level floor is flexible, allowing for multiple configurations for living, office and/or dining space.

For a buyer, the flexibility of the design of the house leaves open the opportunity for myriad interior design options.

Ms Smith added: “The upstairs cozy loft bedrooms each have their own bathroom, with the oversized master bathroom boasting a stylish free-standing tub and separate rain shower.”

There are solar panels which provide free hot water heating, and the realtor added: “ ... a central air-conditioning system makes climate management throughout the house simple.

“There is also a covered outdoor storage area and a large garage and workshop space on the lower floor.” And there is a security system for the house.

The quarter-of-an-acre property also features over 4000 square feet of waterfront along North Shore.

“The rocky outcrops and coves provide for recreational opportunities as well as easy access to the railway trail, Baileys Bay public dock and Coney Island Park,” she said, and added: “It’s also perfect for the airport.”
