Hornets prove a point
The previous meeting between Dandy Town Hornets and Robin Hood was marred by controversy with the Hornets stripped of the Friendship Trophy title after fielding an unlisted player.
There was no such drama in Saturday night’s FA Cup quarter-final match at Goose Gosling Field, however, with Hornets enjoying a relatively comfortable victory Hood, who chose to rest several key players.
Kevin Hurdle, the player who was wrongly brought on in the Friendship Trophy final, a decision that ultimately cost Hornets the trophy, remained an unused substitute in last night’s game.
He simply was not needed as Hornets proved to have too much quality for their opponents, taking the lead after eight minutes through teenager Jahnazae Swan with a close-range finish.
Neither side created much in the way of clear-cut chances in the first half, with Jaylor Bather, the Hood captain, going closest for the home side with a free header from a Marcelos Thomas free kick.
Hood started the better of the two sides after the interval, enjoying plenty of possession, with the introduction of Antwan Russell providing them with greater penetration through the middle.
Russell, the Hood striker, should have done better with at least two opportunities, forcing routine saves from Mikkail Crockwell, the Hornets goalkeeper, before the visiting side went closest to extending their advantage when Angelo Simmons blazed over the bar.
Hornets did not have to wait too long to double their lead, with Jahtino Richardson-Martin’s shot somehow squeezing through the arms of Simons on 74 minutes,
Ayshaun Smith then put the tie beyond any doubt when he rounded Smith before slamming the ball into the top corner on 86 minutes to ensure his side’s safe passage to the semi-finals.
Jomar Wilkinson, the Hornets coach, said that he was proud of his team’s performance, particularly their finishing having struggled in the final third this season.
“Eventually it was convincing and we got off to a good start, but Hood still played a hell of a game,” he said.
“They made it very difficult for us at times but we stuck to the task and got the job done.”
Wilkinson added that his side had moved on after losing the Friendship Trophy to Hood because an administrative error.
“We made some mistakes and we have taken ownership of them and now we have to look forward,” Wilkinson said.
