Pet dog dies in fire at Palm Grove Gardens
A Devonshire family awoke to the loss of a dog after fire broke out inside a residence on the Palm Grove property in the early hours of Saturday.
The pre-dawn blaze, which resulted in three trucks and 13 firefighters descending on the scene shortly before 3.30am, left the sole occupant of the house uninjured.
However, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service could do little to rescue the dog, while the other unidentified pet was able to extricate itself.
The fire spared the main house at Palm Grove, also known as Gibbons Gardens — an extensive South Shore estate near Ariel Sands that has gardens occasionally open to the public, as well as several private homes.
The residence, toward the eastern side of the property, sustained significant smoke and heat damage.
While the cause of the fire is under investigation, it is notable that this is the latest in a spate of fire incidents in recent weeks.
The Fire Service has been kept busy since January 19, when the call came to attend a fire at a derelict two-storey house in Smith’s. What followed on January 26, albeit industrial in nature, was a blaze in the tipping hall of the Tynes Bay waste treatment facility in Devonshire.
Five days later, tragedy struck on Bostock Hill West, in Paget, with Richard Perry, 59, dying after a late-night fire to his home. Mr Perry was pulled unconscious from the structure by firefighters and succumbed to his injuries while at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
This week began with three trucks required to tend to a fire that broke out in dense undergrowth at Quarry Drive, near Khyber Pass in Warwick. Fortunately, the fire was contained to open land. And on Thursday, eight firefighters saw to a fire at a home on Mill Point Lane in Pembroke.
