Christian Roque added another impressive chapter to his family’s harness racing legacy at last weekend’s season finale at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre.

In only his second season, the 13-year-old Mount St Agnes student achieved what others have failed to do in an entire career.

At the helm of his father’s stud, Casmir Camotion, Roque won the coveted Champion of Champions to become the competition’s youngest winner.

“It was definitely one of the proudest moments because I’m the youngest junior to ever win it and I felt pretty good,” Roque said.

“People said I could not hold the horse at the beginning of the season.

“I can and now I have won Champion of Champions with him.”

Roque was declared the winner on fastest average time after stablemate and past Champion of Champions winner, Andrea Westerfield, at the helm of GV Crystal Ball, the fastest qualifier, was controversially set back for interference with another driver in heat 12.

Westerfield would have won instead had she not been penalised.

“We had it all planned and if it wasn’t me it would have been Andrea,” Roque said.

His time of 1:04/4 in heat 16 was the fastest on the day, a time equalled by rival Cameron Harris in the same heat.

Roque’s remarkable feat left his proud grandfather Eddie Roque, a three-times Champion of Champions, in tears.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “It was definitely a proud moment for the family and we have been training for this.

“We didn’t know we were going to win it obviously. But he paid attention to what he was told to do and that’s the key. He has been following his training programme religiously so it had to come.”

As for his other pony’s misfortunes that ultimately proved costly, Eddie Roque said: “Had she [Westerfield] got her time she would have been a full second ahead of Christian.

“But regardless of the fact he is only 13, rides a pony that’s a stallion and a pony everybody thought he was not going to be able to control, and I proved them wrong.

“We knew we would be in the running with both of our horses. It was just unfortunate the other horse got eliminated.”
