Two men caught drinking and driving over the weekend have been banned from the roads.

Courey Evans, 42, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to driving over the legal blood-alcohol limit, speeding and riding without a valid driver’s licence during an incident on Saturday.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith told the court that just before midnight officers were conducting speed checks on Crow Lane in Pembroke when they saw Evans travelling west on a motorcycle at 57km/h.

The officers pulled Evans over and, while speaking with him, noticed that his eyes were glazed and his breath smelled of alcohol. He admitted to the officers that he had three beers and was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

A breath test later revealed that Evans had 124mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, about 50 per cent over the legal limit of 80mg. Police also discovered that he did not have a driver’s licence.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court, Evans pleaded guilty, saying that he had two Amstel beers and a Guinness on the evening of his arrest.

He asked the courts not to ban him from driving, saying that he needed his licence for his work as a reverse osmosis machine technician.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, however, explained that the disqualification was mandatory. “The legislation says once you have two Amstels and a Guinness and drive, you have to be take off the road,” Mr Tokunbo said.

He fined Evans $1,200 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months for driving over the blood-alcohol limit. He further fined Evans $200 for speeding and $150 for driving without a licence.

Paschal Haak, 27, from Warwick, was arrested on Sunday morning on South Road near Elbow Beach.

The court heard that officers were on mobile patrol in the area at about 4.55am when they noticed Haak travelling west on a motorcycle. Haak was reportedly swerving left and right along the road, often crossing into the eastbound lane.

After pulling Haak over, they noticed that his breath smelled of alcohol, that his eyes were glazed and that his voice was slurred. Asked if he had been drinking, he said yes.

Mr Tokunbo fined Haak $1,200 and banning him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
