Overnight blaze at Smith’s home, no injuries
The remains of a two-storey derelict house in Smith’s were still smouldering yesterday after the building was consumed by a fire overnight.
Hours of rain yesterday morning failed to douse the blaze, which was still being tackled by firefighters on Somersall Road.
According to Sergeant Russann Francis of Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, firefighters responded shortly after 1am when a fire was reported in an apparently abandoned building near Ramgoat Hill.
Four vehicles and 11 firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames pouring from both floors of the building.
Divisional Officer Troy Furbert, the principal officer on duty, said four firefighters in breathing apparatus and equipped with two 1½-in hose lines began to quench the fire.
“Firefighters confirmed that all persons were out of the building prior to entering the premises to extinguish the flames,” he said.
There was a partial collapse of the building’s roof and floors, and one person suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
