Hurst enjoys memorable day
Arthur Hurst stood out among the crowd during the last round of harness racing at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre.
The experienced driver rolled back the years, reeling off three heat victories on two different ponies to cap a memorable day of racing at the Vesey Street racetrack.
Hurst, the uncle of Driving Horse and Pony Club (DHPC) president Arnold Manders, swept both heats in the 1:13 and slower division with colt Colonel’s B and then completed a fine treble of victories after crossing the line first in the second heat of the 1:08/3 — 1:10/3 with another colt, Colonel’s J.
Also proving that age is just a number was David Lopes, the former DHPC president, who claimed a victory in the 1:07/2 — 1:08/2 division with gelding Pastor Paul.
Ryan Manders, the youngest driver in local harness racing, Christian Roque and Kiwon Waldron were the remaining multiple heat winners on the day.
Manders drove gelding Approved Credit to victory in the 1:06/1 — 1:07/1 division and then savoured further glory with another gelding, Cherokee’s Ironman, in the 1:05 — 1:06 division.
Roque, grandson of driver Eddie Roque, swept both heats in the 1:05 — 1:06 division with stud Casmir Camotion.
Waldron, another promising driver, achieved victories on two different ponies.
He won the opening heat in the 1:06/1 — 1:07/1 division with gelding A Touch of Red and then completed the double with victory in the second heat of the Free for All with another gelding, Down Home Punch.
Recording the day’s fastest time of 1:05/2 was Cameron Harris with gelding, Brona’s Mike, in the opening heat of the Free for All.
The harness season concludes this weekend with the Champion of Champions races.
