Novice runners Beat the Couch
At the beginning of October few of the Beat the Couch crew had ever imagined running five kilometres.
But after 10 weeks of training, 55 people taking part in the popular fitness programme completed the course at the weekend — pursued by two of Bermuda’s fastest runners.
Chris and Ashley Estwanik may have been pushing a couch on wheels with six children aboard, but the achievement of the group of novice athletes was no less impressive.
This is the fourth year the Beat the Couch race through the back of Pembroke and Hamilton has attracted men and women eager to get fit.
“It was a fantastic day and I am so proud of every person that completed the challenge,” said Catherine Burns, managing director of Natural Ltd and founder of Beat the Couch.
“The early weeks of training are crucial for helping to establish a training routine and warming people up for the challenges that lie ahead.
“Our schedule is extremely flexible but the storms, venue closures and power outages really threw everyone through a loop. However, on race day we had 55 people successfully completing the course ahead the couch. It’s an awesome feeling.”
All of this year’s runners completed the course in less than 50 minutes and, importantly, ahead of the Estwaniks and their wheeled couch.
One participant, Sharon Hensdiek, said it was “an amazing experience”.
“Ten weeks ago, I didn’t think it was possible,” she said. “I’ll be floating around on cloud nine for a while.
“If there is anyone out there who thinks they can’t do it, they should try it. I know you can because I did it.”
This season Beat the Couch secured sponsorship from the Argus Group, which allowed the coaches, Sergio White and Chuck Morgan, to expand the training options.
