Senate celebrates America’s Cup
Bermuda’s victory in securing the America’s Cup in 2017 was celebrated in the Senate yesterday — although concerns were raised that not everyone would benefit.
Both political parties expressed their pleasure that the international event would take place on the Island, with Progressive Labour Party Senator Marc Daniels highlighting what a huge coup the Cup is for Bermuda, and its potential to bring together different segments of the population on a social level.
But he noted during the Motion to Adjourn that efforts had to be made to ensure that the entire country reaped the rewards.
“This is something that could put Bermuda on the map if we pull it off successfully, which I’m sure we will do,” Mr Daniels said, adding that the event could bring a surge in visitors, who could potentially become return visitors, and foreign currency.
But he was also concerned about everyone equally benefiting, saying that the announcement party was to take place on Front Street, resulting in a likely boost to businesses there, while Court Street may not receive the same boost.
“We have a lot to look forward to but a lot to be wary of,” Mr Daniels said. “It could be a benefit to the social fabric but we must handle it with kid gloves.”
Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy described the announcement as “the best news Bermuda has seen in years”, and said the event could provide a kick-start for the Island.
“This is an event that is going to be seen around the world and will bring jobs to many in Bermuda,” Mr Fahy said, noting that any suggestion that people would not receive opportunities from the event would be “disingenuous”.
“We can have other political fights but I do think that when it comes down to America’s Cup, everyone needs to row in the right direction, otherwise we won’t be showcased the way we want around the world,” he added.
Independent Senator James Jardine congratulated Dr Grant Gibbons, the Minister for Economic Development, and his team for their tireless efforts to bring the event to the Island, while PLP Senator Diallo Rabain said the announcement was phenomenal.
He added that the event would bring additional visitors to the Island and provide a boost for the economy, but it would not be a panacea for Bermuda’s economy in the long term.
