Banned drunk driver off the road until 2019

A Warwick man who decided to drive his car while impaired and disqualified will now be off the road five years.

Kevin Mendonca, who was originally charged with impaired driving on October 10, pleaded guilty to impaired driving on November 14 — little more than a month since the original ban. He was also charged for refusing to give a breath sample.

The defendant was fined $1,500 for refusing the breath sample, $1,000 for driving while impaired, and given a three-year ban to follow his existing two-year ban.

The court heard that Mendonca was driving his car in Sandys when he hit another car, knocking its wing mirror off. The driver of the other car took Mendonca’s keys and driver’s licence and Mendonca tried to leave the scene, the court heard.

Police on the scene said that the defendant’s speech was slurred and that they could smell alcohol on his breath. They arrested him and asked if he would take a breath test. He agreed but, when it came to taking the breath test, he then refused.
