The Chewstick Foundation is being forced to move from its Elliott Street location after five years.

The cultural arts charity, which ran a recording studio, performance space and bar at the venue, will cease operation at the property on Monday.

A combination of “an ailing real estate economy and financial challenges” led the landlord to look for a more lucrative use of the property, according to Gavin Smith, Chewstick’s executive director and co-founder.

Chewstick is seeking alternative accommodation within the City of Hamilton.

“Court Street has been our home for more than five years and we feel fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to develop and grow here,” Mr Smith said.

“We have developed key programmes and proven that a vibrant cultural and community hub can change perceptions, break down barriers and support local artists of all types.

“We hope to continue this work in whatever space becomes our new home, and want to take this opportunity to thank our former landlord, Mr Eugene Blakeney Jr, and everyone in the North Hamilton community for their support over the years.

“We would also like to thank all the artists, young people, collaborators and volunteers for their unwavering support, and for having made the Court Street space a home.

“It breaks our heart to have to look elsewhere for a new home, however we are hopeful that with the Bermuda community’s support we will find a way forward.”

Chewstick has a host of “finale” events taking place this weekend. It will be hosting a potluck fundraiser for Boulevard Community Club tomorrow from 6pm to 8pm as well as a performance by Mr Smith at 9pm. On Saturday, there will be auditions for an upcoming SureSilk HairFashion Show from 11am to 1pm. Saturday night will feature hip-hop band DIA from 10pm. Wrapping up the weekend will be “the event that started it all” — Chewstick’s open mic — with doors opening at 8pm.
