`We work with the customer'

Brothers Mr. Llewellyn Butterfiled and Mr. David Butterfield started the business in 1985. Back then it was a small business, but it has now grown to a staff of 17.

And about half of them are family.

Cousin Mr. Stephen Gilbert is foreman at the Bermuda Recycling Plant, which the company runs and another cousin, Mr. Chris Williamson is the foreman in charge of excavation.

Mr. Llewellyn Butterfield's wife Sheree is also a big part of the company as administrative assistant.

Mr. Butterfield says his family works hard. "I find that relatives tend to be more serious about the work.'' The Southampton-based company does more than just excavation. It does construction work, trenching, general trucking and supplies soil and rubble.

In the past year it has branched off into other areas, such as supplying fencing and consulting.

It also caters to a wide range of customers. Previous jobs have included supplying hundreds of tonnes of soil to the US Naval Air Station and digging underground trenches for the American Consulate.

Mr. Llewellyn Butterfield says that although the business has picked up in the past year, the excavation company is still committed to the quality of work.

"Our biggest thing will be to maintain our customer base. We want to take care of our repeat customers and establish an ongoing relationship with new ones,'' he said.

The business offers very competitive prices to its customers. "We work with the customer to get the best price and let them know how to save money,'' said Mr. Butterfield.
