A prominent fast bowler for the west enders in the mid-summer classic, he was also a long-serving allrounder for Willow Cuts, for whom he played until the late 60s.

Anthony (Sonny) Roberts, a Cup Match teammate of Swan's for several years, remembered him as a superb bowler who often chipped in with the bat and made useful knocks while at the crease.

"He was a very useful fast bowler who had a dashing bat. I remember him having a particularly good knock against a West Indian touring select on one occasion, '' recalled Roberts.

"He played under me when I was skipper in 1952, but he had been a member of the Cup Match side at least five years prior to that appearance and he stayed around and played in the classic until the mid-60s.'' According to Roberts, Swan was a true lover of the sport and contributed many years to both Willow Cuts and Somerset.

A well-known mason, Swan became a regular cricketer in the late 40s after returning from the United States where he served in the American army -- and their loss turned out to be a huge gain for Bermuda cricket and the west end clubs in particular.

Bermuda's technical director of soccer Clyde Best also remembered Swan after having made his debut as a colt at St. George's in 1966. Swan was the team captain at that time.

"Buck Juice was a great cricketer, a good bowler and hard hitter of the ball.

He was liked by everybody and will be long remembered by all,'' said Best.

After retiring from the game Swan had become an avid golfer and played regularly at various courses throughout the Island.

His funeral will be held at St. James Church in Somerset today at 2 p.m.

Leroy Thompson, another well-known Somerset sportsman, recently passed away after a long illness.

A defender and utility soccer player for the Trojans through the late 60s and early 70s, Thompson was also a fine softball player for the Somerset Eagles.

"I had only a year playing with him, his nephew and I were best of friends.

We went to his barber shop to get our hair cuts and he was a Manchester United supporter and he was the one who got us to support United at that early stage,'' recalled Best.

"One of the things I was able to do was to get him an autographed Manchester United jersey being such an avid fan. He was a true Trojan and what little time I had playing with him was indeed a pleasure.

"He understood the game, he was always a hard worker who would not let you or his team-mates down and I am quite certain that he will be sadly missed by lots of friends throughout the Island,'' said Best.
