organisations get together and celebrate during the first St. George's Christmas Festival.

The St. George's Foundation, Bermuda National Trust, St. George's Chamber of Commerce, St. George's Historical Society and others will host a series of events promoting the historical town this season.

During shopping hours, childminding services, organ music and free parking will become the norm as officials hope to draw the Christmas shopping public into the town.

Other highlights to draw crowds include daily shopping specials, weekly and grand prize draws.

The month-long event is centred around the Bermuda National Trust's historical walk.

Scott Hunter, chairman of the St. George's Foundation Fund Raising Committee, said last year's walk was a great success.

"Last year we had wonderful weather. We had hundreds and hundreds (of people).'' he said.

"It really sensitises and introduces the historical aspects of St.

George's.'' The festival officially begins when town officials switch on the Christmas lights, Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. in King's Square.

On Friday, December 1, the National Trust Walk will start and run from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m.

Those interested in participating are asked to call the National Trust at 236-6483.

The following day is the Christmas Crafts and Family Fun Day, starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m.

The Home-Grown Alternatives Art Fair at Penno's Wharf will run throughout the day -- featuring locally made hand-crafted gifts, complimentary gift-wrapping and a bake sale by Stella Maris Church.

A horse and buggy shuttle will ferry passengers from free parking at Penno's and Marginal Wharf from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other day long activities include a Memorial Christmas Tree decorating and two Floral Christmas Decoration Displays at Tucker House and the St. George's Historical Society Museum.

Both admissions are free.

The Bermudian Heritage Museum will also offer free admission from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition, there will be photos with Santa, a walking tour starting at King's Square and a mayor's greeting.

On December 9, the Santa Claus Parade is hoped to draw out large crowds and on December 13, carollers will hit the street in force in St. George's.
