A night to rejoice, remember at CedarBridge
Last Thursday night, November 7th, was a night to remember! As one of the recipients in the “Shape Shifters” awards ceremony at Ruth Seaton James Auditorium, an event hosted by the English Department, I was exciting to see Ruth Seaton James almost full to capacity with staff, friends and family members of the recipients and performers. This ‘Celebration of Excellence’ at CedarBridge Academy highlighted not only academic achievement in English, but also showcased the creative talent at our school.
The first segment of the evening was the ‘Blast from the Past’ featuring the many different talents of the senior students of CedarBridge Academy. The audience was treated to dance, poetry, music and essays. Also, Mrs Sheryll Ricardo, a former English teacher of CedarBridge Academy, delivered a phenomenal and unique monologue which left the audience ecstatic! Next was the distribution of the academic certificates, and I was very proud as I walked up to the stage to receive my certificate for passing my IGCSE English exam. This had an impact on me because it made me realise that “the more you put in, the more you get out”.
The second highlight of the evening was ‘Taste of the Future’ starring students who sang, danced and read poetry. This segment was inspiring because of the quality of young talent that we have at CedarBridge. One of the most dynamic moments was the presentation of poems written in response to the civil rights movement and the novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. The poems were followed by a fantastic rendition of the song ‘Stand up for Life’. The audience showed their appreciation by clapping and cheering wildly for each great act.
Lastly, principal Mrs Richards recognised the teachers in the English Department. This was a touching moment for students because all the teachers that were up on stage were the ones who supported them through their progress. According to Mrs Richards, the students and teachers were, without a doubt, “BIG TIME!” Another tender moment was when my dear friend, Aalai Wolffe, sang, ‘Wind Beneath my Wings’ to all the English teachers for their hard work, support and dedication.
In closing, it was a proud and exciting night for all recipients and performers. Family and friends were also delighted for their loved ones and the teachers were just as thrilled for their students. The night was enjoyed by all who attended. What a night, indeed!
