Junior golfers learning by caddying
You don't have to be an invited guest or celebrity to get close to the pros. All you have to do is be a junior golfer.
About 24 members of the Junior Golf Association had the opportunity of a lifetime on Monday and yesterday as they caddied for the amateur golfers and stood on the same green as the pros at the 25th PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Alex White, Jeffrey Olson, Ryan Benevides and Taiquan Ottley were members of the elite group of youngsters working hard on the course instead of sitting at a desk in the classroom.
The young men's responsibilities for the Pro-Am included being caddies for the amateurs, following them and Padraig Harrington, Zach Johnson and Angel Cabrera over the 18 holes.
Ryan's mother, Georgia Benevides, has driven them both days to the events and said: "These guys are the hardest workers here. Yesterday they were caddies and today they are doing the scoreboard."
Jeffrey, 15, explained the Junior Golfers Association sent out emails asking for volunteers for the event and the four of them signed up immediately.
The Saltus and CedarBridge Academy students have played golf for the past two to three years at Tucker's Point and Mid Ocean.
When asked why they volunteered for the tournament, the answers were similar across the board.
Jeffrey said: "I came because you get to watch the pros. That's the biggest perk."
Alex,15, said: "It's the atmosphere. You get to see all the people coming around to watch the pros. It's kind of fun."
Ryan, who received a $50 tip on Monday, agreed it was the atmosphere and Taiquan said he enjoyed the free food.
The boys were excused from school but said they will have to play catch up once they get back including a chemistry test Ryan missed.
Ryan,14, and Taiquan,16, both agreed Padraig Harrington was their favourite player and the man who would win the tournament while Alex and Jeffrey favoured Angel Cabrera because "he is unique".
Jeffrey said: "He's the long knocker. We all came out to see his long drives and 30 foot putts."
Mrs. Benevides said it was a great opportunity for the kids to work at the event. "I think for kids at this age to be able to caddy at a PGA event is amazing."
The foursome agreed golf was their favourite sport but had different reasons why.
Alex said it is the only sport you don't have to be competitive because you can sit out and relax and even play by yourself. Jeffrey said he liked golf because you can eat before you play unlike other sports and said it will look good on his resume.
And Ryan said he enjoyed being outdoors and Taiquan explained he played because he likes to make good shots.
The boys agreed Ryan is the best player out of the four of them but were quick to say they weren't far behind.
