The Bermuda College may have day care facilities and on-campus student housing within two years.

And a proposal to increase the Stonington Hotel's guest capacity may also be in the cards.

Brian Hall, chairman of the College's Board of Governor's, told The Royal Gazette a recent Planning Department application was the first step in the College's move into the millennium.

Architects in charge of the "master plan'' of development are seeking approval for additional teaching buildings, multi-storey parking, housing for local and foreign students, staff residences, hotel accomodation, tennis courts, a swimming pool, additional playing fields, and a day care centre.

And on behalf of Government, the College's Board of Governors is also seeking to erect a new Post Office for the Paget area.

Mr. Hall said the day care and pre-school facility, and student residences had top priority.

He was cautiously optimistic about when the plan would be launched and completed, but said work could begin as early as next year to build a day care centre and pre-school.

And Mr. Hall said he was also eager to fulfil his promise made during a recent convocation ceremony to establish on-campus student housing by the year 2000.

Such a development would make the College's possible future transition to a four-year institution smoother and would lead to a greater feeling of team spirit among students, he said.

However, school authorities are awaiting results of the "Bermuda Student Housing Survey'' circulated to nearby residents, students, parents, administrators, politicians and instructors.

Included in the survey are questions about the desirability of on-campus housing, whether the campus will benefit from international students, and what elements -- including meal plans, curfews, personal growth, and co-habitation -- should be important considerations.

The results from the survey are expected to be available by the middle of next month.

Mr. Hall also responded with a "conservative yes'' when asked whether or not there was room for the Stonington Hotel to expand with so many other hotels being built or renovated.

And Mr. Hall stressed that the College would do whatever was necessary to maintain the resort's standards to ensure students received the best possible training.
