Somerset Trojans 2 Devonshire Cougars 1Somerset Trojans coach Mike Corday said his players would have even more reason to savour their Boxing Day win over Devonshire Cougars in the semi-final of the Friendship Trophy.Cougars boss Dennis Brown quit Trojans in the summer to take the reigns at Devonshire Rec. and cut a forlorn figure after watching his side crash out against his former club at a rain-sodden Southampton Oval.Substitute striker Jonathan Bean struck at extra-time winner as Trojans shrugged off Cougars to reach their first Friendship final since defeating the Big Cats in the 2007 final. And while Corday played down any talk of Trojans’ players seeking revenge over Brown for walking out on them, he admitted they would take some satisfaction in putting one over their former boss.“I don’t know if (playing against Cougars) gave the players any more motivation but I’m sure they will savour this victory because it was against Dennis,” he said.“I’ve played and coached alongside Dennis so we knew what to expect from Cougars who are a well-organised side.”Corday believed the game could have gone either way with both teams missing several good chances.“We had to dig deep and it was a battle out there at times. Both teams had chances and either team could have won the tie but I felt we were worthy of the victory,” he said.“We’re certainly not looking just to survive this season and if a trophy comes our way then that will be great.”Corday’s side, who were reduced ten men when Zahkrie Iris was sent off in the second half of extra-time after picking up two yellow cards, will now meet North Village at the National Sports Centre on New Year’s Day.Trojans helped themselves to an early lead through Malachi Jones who slotted home a penalty in the eighth minute after being hauled down in the box by Cougars defender Kijuan Franks.Jones, better known for his cricketing exploits for the Bermuda national team, missed two further chances to add to his tally, firing a volley inches over Shaquille Bean’s upright before forcing a smart save from the Trojans keeper with a point-blank header.Domico Coddington, who was well shackled throughout by Trojans full back Iris, had Cougars’ best chance of the first period but saw his weak left foot strike easily foiled by Bean. Both teams were struggling to keep possession due to the difficult rainy conditions but it was Cougars who were showing the greater urgency after the break. They drew level on 65 minutes when midfielder Moses Steede converted a penalty won by Mark Steede, who was tripped by Bean while trying to make amends for spilling a shot.Despite surrendering their lead, Trojans showed plenty of fighting spirit over their own with Justin Corday impressing in midfield and substitutes Tahj Wade and Jonathon Bean both having telling contributions. In the 95th minute Wade swung over a looping cross which should have been easily collected by Kioshi Trott, but the young keeper somehow allowed Bean to out jump him and head home from close range. In the Shield semi-final at Southampton Oval on Monday, Hamilton Parish beat Young Men’s Social Club 3-1.Kaiya Darrell, Shayne Hollis and Donovan Thompson scored for the Hot Peppers, while youngster Zeiko Lewis converted a penalty for YMSC.Somerset Trojans: S Bean, Z Iris, J Rogers, D Seymour, T Ming, A Trott, J Scott, J Butterfield (T Wade, 65), J Corday, L Burgess (J Bean, 65), M JonesSubstitutes not used: G Smith, D Simmons, T Harris, A CharlesGoals: Jones (pen) 9, Bean, 95Yellow cards: L BurgessRed card: Z IrisDevonshire Cougars: K Trott, J Butterfield, J Seymour, K Franks (Jawonday Smith, 72), D Cox, Moses Steede, C Caisey, T Steede, D Coddington, Mark Steede (S Pearman, 70), L Simmons (R Baker, 80)Substitutes not used: C Darrell, Jamie Smith, J Mouchette, K GoddardGoal: Moses Steede, 65Yellow cards: Moses Steede, C CaiseyMan of the match: T Ming (Trojans)
