The Prince was asked by trustee Mr. John McCulloch if he would take the position when he visited the Island in November.
It is likely that Prince Michael, who visited the museum while he was here, will now come annually and will participate in fund-raising events.
Mr. McCulloch approached Prince Michael's private secretary, Lt. Col. Sir Christopher Thompson.
A statement from Government House said Governor Lord Waddington "has expressed his delight and pleasure'' over Prince Michael's decision.
