What to wear for the perfect date on Valentine’s Day
February is often recognised as the month of love.
So it’s no wonder why as Valentine’s Day approaches, one can’t help but be bombarded by pink flowers, chocolate hearts and ruby hued cards at every street corner.
If you can’t escape from it, why not embrace it? Which explains why The Royal Gazette’s Lifestyle section took to the City of Hamilton this week armed with a sweet question: what would be your go to style for a date?
We ran into two stylish ladies and one trendsetting male who shared their thoughts on appropriate date attire. Hopefully it will inspire you this month — whether you’re planning a dinner with your spouse, brave enough to try a first date with someone new or just planning a single girl’s night out on the town.
According to Hannah Quinn, her favourite go-to item for a date night is a pair of heels “to show off the legs”.
The 24-year-old store manager described her style as “quirky”, “geeky” and “chic”. A lover of books and video games, Ms Quinn tends to dress depending on how she feels, but also takes into account factors like the how she is travelling around for the day and the weather. “I’ve been wearing this hat all week because of the sunshine and my colouring so I need to cover up. It’s also funky,” she said.
“I tend to wear flats during the day because I walk around a lot and picked this coat because my boyfriend has his motor bike so I have to stay warm.”
She said the best part of getting ready for an evening was just seeing her date’s reaction to her look.
“I like seeing my boyfriend’s face when he sees me,” she said. “It’s just the idea of being appreciated and knowing I took his breath away.”
Lawyer Kyle Masters, 30, chooses his style for a date, depending on the place he and his wife, Lianna, are going.
“I don’t think we dress up much,” he said. “But I usually wear whatever she wants to see me in. For me the best part about going out is definitely seeing her in her outfit, that’s what I like most.”
Mr Masters said he takes inspiration from reading men’s magazines like GQ, as well as by following a few Instagram accounts.
He tends to be quite fearless with his fashion and said he is not afraid or wearing colours or patterns when it comes to casual or business attire. “I wear what I like,” he added.
Debbie Mello tends to be “the spur of the moment type” when it comes to picking her outfits for the day.
The 29-year-old said: “I’m not one of those people who lay anything out. It’s just what I’m feeling like that day. I probably have one item and build my outfit from there.”
She said her husband likes it when she keeps it simple, so her go to item for a date is usually a little black dress and pair of high heels.
“My favourite part is seeing his reaction to me getting dressed up,” she said. “I love getting dressed up period. It’s always fun, so any excuse to get dressed up is good for me.
“What you wear tells people what mood you are in, what type of person you are or what kind of attitude you have.
“I hope my dress sense shows I like to be different and am not afraid to put something unique together. For me, matching is not in,” she added.
