A former champion at Queens Club in London, Rolls is seeded number one at Coral Beach. She admitted to being nervous during the opening moments of yesterday's match, but went on to win 10 consecutive games to seal the second set and the victory.

In Century Mixed doubles, Gretchen Devlin and Patrick O'Kelly almost came back from a 5-0 deficit in the second set, but lost to Gill Butterfield and Dick Mount 6-3, 6-4.

"They were really better than the score indicated,'' said Mount. Mount said things began to change for their opponents when Devlin moved to the backhand court allowing O'Kelly to play the forehand side.

Ann Duff and Nick Frost came from a set behind to upset third seeds Kelly Holland and Ralph Howe 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 while Reto Krauer defeated Wilfred Gonsalves with a hard-fought 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 triumph.

The highly-anticipated match between Donald Evans and Vernal Davis never took place when Davis failed to show up for the match. Evans will now meet Nick Frost in quarter-final action today. Frost defeated Brian Robinson 6-2, 6-1 yesterday.

SOFTBALL SOF Bill Spencer and Roy Lumley each drove in four runs to lead Powerscourt to a convincing 24-13 win over Elbow Beach in Commercial Winter League action on Monday night.

Spencer had four hits, including a triple, while Lumley contributed three hits to lead the attack.

Pitcher Mark Mello was credited with the victory while Elbow Beach hurler Paul Williams was tagged with the loss.

Williams made up for his performance on the mound to drive in three runs on two hits with a sacrifice fly and double. Elliott Pitcher also drove in three runs in the losing cause.

Centre Re's Tom Finks shined at the plate with four runs batted in, helping his own cause as pitcher in a 19-4 triumph over Skandia Sabres.

Chris Spurling made the most of his two hits, one a home run, to drive in three runs.

Robin Hamill, with three hits, also slugged a round-tripper.

Kim Daniels was the lone hitting star for Skandia, with two hits in three plate appearances. Dave Youens was the losing pitcher.

Marsh and McLennan narrowly defeated Arthur Andersen 16-14 behind the solid batting performance of Steve Outerbridge who had a homer and drive in five runs. Gerrit DeJonge had three hits in four plate appearances and drove in two runs to help winning pitcher Peter Card.

Scott Lewis and Tony Cordeiro led the Anderson attack, but Cordeiro's home run wasn't enough to help losing pitcher Jose Lopez.

SWIMMING SW The third and final day of competition in the Winter Age Group Championships takes place this Saturday at the BASA Pool, with a large entry expected as swimmers compete in the popular sprint events.

There will be 60 races in eight and under, nine and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 14 and open divisions. Warm-ups will begin at noon with the first event due to begin at 1 p.m.

Based on previous form, Brianna Holmes looks set to win trophies in the girls' eight and under division, while Roy-Allan Burch has dominated the boys events in that same age group.

Paul Murphy, Richard Jones and Scott Simmons have excelled in the boys' nine and 10 group. Emma Rego, meanwhile, has won all her races in the girls nine and ten category and looks unbeatable.

Nuri Latham is poised to top Paul Fox while Jessica Sousa has been solid in the boys and girls 11 and 12 groups respectively.

Elisha Miller and Ronald Cowen have the most points in the 13 and 14 group, although Miller could face stiff competition from Zoe Roberts in the freestyle and butterfly races.

Alicia Mullan is points leader in the girls' open category, followed closely by Tamika Williams. Stephen Fahy is first overall in the boys open age group, with Trevor Ferguson as runner up.

TABLE TENNIS PP Bermuda Table Tennis Association yesterday announced the team selected to compete at the US Open Team Championships in Detroit from November 25 to 27.

Bermuda will send two teams to the US, and the squads will be captained by Dennis Pearman and Rawle Frederick.

The Island has been sending teams to the event since 1983.

Players will leave for Detroit on November 23 and will return to Bermuda on November 28.

Team number one: Dennis Pearman (captain), Nick Frost, Philip Hackett, Dwayne Hill.

(Team number two: Rawle Frederick (captain and tour manager), Kacy King, Eldon Ray, Owen Hunt.

ROAD RUNNING RUN Qualifying trials for January's popular Bank of Butterfield Front Street Mile have been scheduled for December 10 (1.00 p.m.) and December 11 (10.00 a.m.) at the National Stadium.

The fastest 20 qualifiers among primary school boys and girls, secondary boys and girls and seniors will be invited to compete in the finals on Friday, January 13 (7.30 p.m.).

SOCCER SOC The Bermuda Under-23 team, currently preparing for Pan-Am qualifying matches scheduled for Jamaica later this month, play their final practice game tonight against Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Rec. beginning at 7.30 p.m.
