Free transport for senior citizens
The Joint Labour Day Organising Committee yesterday announced that Public Transportation director Mr. Herman Basden had made the offer.
Special buses will leave Somerset from Watford Bridge and travel on the Middle Road, dropping off passengers at the Government Tennis Stadium for Labour Day activities at Bernard Park.
Buses will also leave St. George's from the entrance of King's Square and travel along North Shore Road to the Tennis Stadium.
The buses will pick up senior citizens, going back to Somerset or St.
George's, from the Tennis Stadium at 6 p.m.
CTS Photographer stole roll of film A self-employed photographer was fined $80 for stealing a roll of film.
Allan Smith, 39, of Hermitage Road Devonshire, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court.
Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Smith went into the Phoenix Centre on August 27 and put a roll of Kodak Gold 100 film in a camouflage scarf that was in his hand.
Smith then walked out of the store without paying for the film which was worth $15.90, Sgt. Dale said.
He was stopped by store security outside of the store and was arrested on suspicion of theft. Smith said he had $20 and offered to pay for the film.
MAN DENIES STEALING TELEVISION SETS CTS Man denies stealing television sets A 45-year-old Pembroke man yesterday denied stealing $1,765 worth electronic equipment from a Pembroke residence.
Derrick DeShields, of Angle Street, was charged with stealing two television sets and two video recorders.
He also denied stealing $4 worth of chicken legs.
Acting Magistrate the Wor. Kim White heard that both offences were alleged to have taken place on August 14.
He granted DeShields $500 bail and ordered him to return to court on February 1 for trial.
SANDYS MAN FINED $100 FOR PIPE CTS Sandys man fined $100 for pipe Having a pipe for drug use cost a 33-year-old man $100 yesterday.
Terence Astwood, of Middle Road, Sandys Parish pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court.
Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Police saw Astwood walking on Cobb's Hill Road in Paget on March 8. He was carrying a plastic bag.
Sgt. Dale said Police recognised Astwood and stopped to ask him what he had in his bag.
Astwood told Police he had a pair of jeans in his bag and took a pair of jeans out of the bag.
He said he had nothing else in the bag but when Police searched it, Sgt. Dale said, they saw a small miniature spirit bottle that had been corked and modified for drug use.
An analysis of the bottle found residue of crack cocaine.
CRASH RIDER WAS DRIVING WHILE BANNED CTS Crash rider was driving while banned A 20-year-old Pembroke man, who was taken off the road for three years in February, was yesterday fined $450 for driving while disqualified.
Bruce Davis, of Crisson Avenue, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court.
Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Davis, who was riding a motorcycle, collided with another vehicle at the junction of Court and Dundonald streets on July 23.
After the accident, Police discovered that Davis was disqualified from driving until February, 1998.
Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis warned Davis that he could end up in prison if he was caught driving while disqualified again.
ST. GEORGE'S MAN FINED FOR DRUGS CTS St. George's man fined for drugs A 20-year-old St. George's man was this week fined $300 for possessing 2.4 grams of cannabis.
Damien Mendoza, of Old Maids Lane, pleaded guilty to the charge in Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said Police received a call from a member of the public on May 2 who said a young man was drug trafficking on York Street in St. George's.
When Police approached Mendoza, he removed something from his rear pocket and began to act suspiciously, Sgt. Dale said.
Police searched him and found four manila envelopes in a T-shirt that was tied around his neck. Mendoza said he had the drug for his own use.
