A group dedicated to protecting the rich environment of Bermuda’s neighbouring Sargasso Sea has been commended by the International SeaKeepers Society, a worldwide marine conservation organisation.The Sargasso Sea Alliance, an international partnership led by the Bermuda Government, got the 2013 International SeaKeepers of the Year award in recognition of “exceptional contributions to the protection of the world’s oceans”.The award was formally given on Monday night at a gala in San Francisco.According to a spokesman for the SSA, the timing of the Sea Keepers award was “key” — since the SSA is to work with Bermuda’s government early next year in hosting an international meeting aimed at adopting a Declaration on the Collaboration for the Conservation of the Sargasso Sea, along with a permanent Sargasso Sea Commission.
